# Tokenization

> Learn about payment tokenization and compare tokenization types in FunnelFox Billing.

Payment tokenization replaces sensitive card information with a secure token. This protects your customers' card details and reduces the risk of data breaches.

FunnelFox Billing offers two types of tokenization:

* **Platform tokenization**: Your payment provider creates and stores tokens.
* **Network tokenization**: Card networks like Visa and Mastercard create tokens directly.

Learn more below about each tokenization type.

## Platform tokenization

Platform tokenization is enabled by default.

When a customer makes a payment, your payment provider replaces their card details with a randomly generated string of characters called a token. FunnelFox Billing processes only this token, never the actual payment details.

This approach significantly reduces the risk of card data breaches and enhances overall payment security by minimizing exposure of sensitive debit or credit card data.

## Network tokenization

Network tokenization is disabled by default.

Network tokens provide enhanced security (reduce fraud) and increase payment acceptance rates.

Card networks like Visa or Mastercard issue network tokens that replace the traditional payment details with a unique, secure identifier. Unlike platform tokens, network tokens are directly linked to a customer's account rather than just the card number.

For example, if a customer's card expires or gets replaced due to loss, the network token adjusts to reflect the new card details automatically. This means you can continue charging customers even after their original card has expired.

### Enable network tokenization

Request network tokenization from your FunnelFox
Billing dashboard.

1. Go to the **Payment Features** page.

2. Click **Request** to the right of **Network Tokenization**.

4. Click **Submit request**.

We enroll your business with Visa and Mastercard as a token requestor and configure token creation for your account. Activation typically takes 2–3 business days.

### Enable with your Stripe account

If you connect your own Stripe account, there's one extra requirement. By
default, Stripe doesn't process externally created network tokens, so you must
enable **Bring Your Own Token (BYOT)** on all of your Stripe accounts. Without
it, network tokenization won't work.

<Warning>
  To enable BYOT, contact your Stripe Account Manager. This is a separate process
  on Stripe's side and can take from about a week to several weeks. We're happy to
  help with the request and can escalate through our payment partners if needed.
</Warning>

You can use the following message as a starting point:

```text theme={null}
Hi Stripe Team,
We're using a payment orchestration layer and would like to enable Network
Tokenization through it. To process externally created network tokens through
our Stripe account(s), we need Bring Your Own Token (BYOT) to be enabled.
Could you please gate all of our Stripe accounts for BYOT?
Account ID(s): [Stripe account ID]
Thank you!
```
